Graphite

Graphite | Earth Sciences Museum | University of Waterloo

Graphite is the purest form of carbon. It is a crystalline allotropic form of carbon. Commercially it is prepared by passing alternative current through molten mixture of sand and coke. It is also Known as black lead.

In graphite, each carbon atom is linked with the other carbon atoms by three covalent bonds. There are layers of hexagonally arranged carbon atoms. There Carbons atoms are arranged in regular hexagonal rings.  These layers can slide one over another. Out of four valance electron of carbon atom, three are used to form bond. There is still one more electron localized on each carbon atom. These free electron help in the conduction of electricity  for which graphite is good conductor of electricity.
